In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., CCNYC welcomes Rachel Fisher of R Squared Productions to share NEIGHBORS, a workshop that uses documentary film to help organizations create community out of diversity.
Through NEIGHBORS, individuals embrace their own intersectionality and that of others, developing empathy for one another and thus creating community. The workshop creates a safe space for individuals to explore their own social identities along the matrices of advantage and disadvantage relating to class, race, religion, gender and sexual orientation that are ever-present in our society.
Part I: Participants watch the documentary film, I Shall Not Be Silent, about civil rights activist Joachim Prinz.
Part II: Participants discuss social identity in the film and its changes over time and place.
Part III: Participants engage in exercises and discussion to raise awareness of their own and others’ multiple social identities.
Part IV: Creating a stronger community through understanding of social identity and experience.
